Summertime in western Montana means fun times for young campers. The area offers a dizzying variety of summer day and residential camps – something, or several somethings, for everyone.

Here is our annual guide to summer camps, as submitted by camp managers all across western Montana.

Smokejumper camp
Junior Smokejumper Experience, offered weekdays from mid-June to mid-August by appointment, Missoula Smokejumper Base. Program put on by the U.S. Forest Service includes hands-on activities that cover fire management and behavior, smokejumper training and tools, parachute techniques, weather, and aircraft. Animal camp
Critter Camp, June 22-25 and July 13-16 for 7- to 9-year-olds; June 29-July 2 and July 20-23 for 10- to 12-year-olds; Humane Society of Western Montana, 5930 Highway 93 S. Day campers will participate in educational, animal-related games and art projects, and activities like caring for an adoptable cat for the week. Campers will learn about wildlife from many different organizations and go on at least one field trip. Cost: $145 includes supplies, presentations and a T-shirt. Campers will need to bring a bag lunch and two snacks daily. Only 12 spaces are available in each session. Applications available at HSWM and www.myhswm.org. Photography camp
Kids’ Photography Class. Explore the many interesting, fascinating and unique places your hometown has to offer with a camera, learning the techniques of photography with Suzette Dussault. Camp is 12:30-4:30 p.m. Cost: $75 per week. Dates to be arranged. Enrollment is limited to eight. Call 543-4006 for information and to register.

Leadership camp
Habitat for Humanity of Missoula “Youth Week” June 15-19. Gives young people the chance to learn about Habitat for Humanity and to contribute to the organization. Individuals or groups ages 16-20 work on three home sites under construction in the Windsor Park area. Work times can be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., noon to 4 p.m., or the full day. Lunch provided. Filmmaking camps
MCAT is offering two summer camps in 2010 for kids ages 9-14. The first summer camp is June 21-23, 1-5:30 p.m. This camp will take a field trip midweek to the Raptors of the Rockies, a raptor education project in the Bitterroot featuring owls, hawks and peregrines. Kate Davis, the director of the center, will help campers make a documentary about a bird of their choice. Cost is $100. The second camp is July 19-25, 1:15-5:15 p.m. Campers in this session will learn stop-action animation, computer-generated backgrounds and personal video project tools. This camp will visit the Missoula Fire Department on Van Buren Street. Firefighters there will demonstrate fire-fighting equipment, fire engines and life around the firehouse. Cost is $85. The Montana Film Academy at the Roxy Theater offers one- to four-week camps in June, July and August. Learn wildlife filmmaking in the field; enjoy hiking, fishing and photography; produce your own film; work with professional filmmakers and wildlife biologists. There will be a special premier night screening of campers’ films. Programs include Wildlife & Nature & Outdoor Adventure Filmmaking Camps, Summer Documentary Filmmaking Camps and Summer Film Workshops; 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday; ages 9-12 and 13-17. Beginning and Advanced filmmaking, two-week camps include guided fly-fishing lessons with Grizzly Hackle Outfitters. Bereavement camp
A Camp to Remember, ages 8-14, Aug. 8-11, Georgetown Lake and June 17-20, Flathead Lake. High schoolers, Sept. 24-26, Flathead Lake. Provides a fun, supportive healing experience for kids and adults grieving the death of a family member. Interdisciplinary camp
Kootenai Creek Ranch Summer Day Camp in Stevensville offers a unique interdisciplinary equestrian day camp for children ages 7-15. Each day includes professional training in horsemanship, performing and visual arts. Each session is 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday and includes snacks and lunch. Half day is also available but does not include horsemanship. There is currently availability in session 2, June 28-July 2, and session 3, July 6-10. Math camps
Math for Fun Camp, July 26-31, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-noon, University of Montana, Math Learning Center. Cost is $75, limited to 20 students entering grades 5-6. Advanced Middle School Math Camp, Aug. 2-6, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-noon, University of Montana, Math Building. Cost is $75. Fourth annual math camp focuses on advanced problem-solving for students entering grades 7-8. Students employ alternative algorithms for computation and learn to look for and recognize patterns while making connections between similar problem-solving situations. Writing camps
Montana Writing Project Young Writers Workshop, June 28-July 9, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m., University of Montana Campus. The Montana Writing Project is offering its sixth annual Young Writers Summer Camp for students in grades 6-9. Participants will receive individualized writing instruction, engage with other writers, and have opportunities to share their work. Cost is $175, which covers materials, instruction, and snacks. Cooking camp
Cooking Club Camp. Kids, want to chop, dice, mince, mix, stir, saute, boil and bake? Join teacher Suzette Dussault in a week of cooking and eating offered for ages 6-plus. Prepare delicious and nutritious meals while learning about good food, food that’s good for you, cooking how-tos and kitchen safety. Horse Show Camp, Dunrovin Ranch, Lolo, June 21-25. Young women going into grades six through nine will learn about horses, practice show horse skills, create a show costume and perform a horse show for their parents and friends. Camp is from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m.; before- and after-camp care is available. Thursday night includes an overnight camping stay, cookout and short trail ride. Friday evening ends the camp with a horse show. Mother/Daughter Camp, Dunrovin Ranch, Lolo, Aug. 2-6. Mothers and their adolescent daughters will have plenty of special bonding time as they learn “the ropes” of horseback riding, horse care, trick roping, line dancing, fly-fishing, river floating, special arts, crafts, games and contests. Camp is 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. daily. Thursday night includes an overnight camping stay, cookout and short trail ride. Health camps
Med Start is a free one-week summer camp, July 18-25, for high school students interested in a health care career at Montana State University in Bozeman. Med Start provides one-on-one training with professionals, job shadowing, clinic tours, financial aid information and social activities. Med Start is open to current sophomores and juniors in high school and 30 students will be selected statewide. Camp Mak-A-Dream offers medically supervised, cost-free camp programs for children, young adults and families affected by cancer at its 87-acre facility in Gold Creek. Summer of Rock. Campers will get to form a band with other musicians, learn to record their music with computers, learn improvisation techniques, explore the history of rock ’n’ roll and learn how to use their music gear correctly. Kid’s Music and Movement Day Camp. A weeklong day camp for kids ages 6-11 that combines music with physical activities. Campers will explore music through guitar, singing and drumming, and experience taekwondo, creative movement games, gymnastics and yoga. Recording Studio Camp. This weeklong day camp will offer participants hands-on experience with digital audio recording techniques and equipment in a professional recording studio. Campers will have the opportunity to record and mix a CD of their own music at Missoula Soundworks Studio, and gain skills and knowledge that will allow them to record at home using basic computer equipment and free software. Montana Lyric Opera’s Summer Opera Camp is a two-week day camp, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., that runs July 26-Aug. 6, with performances on Aug. 6 and 7. The camp is open to ages 8-18. Campers will take part in daily music and staging rehearsals, vocal coaching, movement, voice and acting classes, plus two performances of a full-length youth opera. Tuition is $275. Next Step Prep Summer 2010 Musical Theatre Intensive, June 28-Aug. 6. Next Step Prep is an intense musical theater training program developed in conjunction with the Missoula Children’s Theatre, offering daily instruction in dance, singing and acting. Classes are held at the MCT Center for the Performing Arts in Missoula, Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m., with additional sessions Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Enrollment is open to students entering grades nine-12 in the fall, as well as high school graduates seeking master class training. High school students will earn three semester credits to transfer back to their schools. The Missoula Children’s Theatre holds three-day camps every summer. Each camp is a one-week rehearsal process for an original MCT musical, which culminates in performances at the end of the week. Children entering grades one-12 are invited to register. All children participate in an audition, are cast in a role and perform in the show. When not in rehearsal, participants will attend acting, movement and art workshops taught by MCT staff. Missoula Children’s Theatre East Shore Performing Arts Skills Camp, Aug. 1-8. This theatre skill-building program for students entering grades six and seven is held at Camp Paxson near Seeley Lake. Whitefish Theatre Co. 2010 Summer Camp. Registration forms are available at the O’Shaughnessy Center or online at www.whitefish
theatreco.org. WTC will offer summer camps in June and July at the O’Shaughnessy Center in Whitefish. Camps include a two-week all-day musical camp culminating in a performance of “Go Dog Go,” and two weeks of half-day camps for children entering grades 1-6. Campers also have the option of a full-day camp by participating in ArtSampler camps provided by WTC, North Valley Music School and Stumptown Art Studio. Outdoor, adventure, wilderness camps
2010 Trout Unlimited Montana Conservation and Fly Fishing Camp. Fifteen students between ages 12 and 15 will be selected to spend June 27-July 1 learning about fly-fishing, stream restoration, and other topics on the banks of Georgetown Lake. There will also be a fish hatchery visit and creek fishing on private waters. Cost: $300, includes all meals and lodging. 24th annual Montana Natural Resources Camp, July 11-16. Campers spend the week at the Lubrecht Experimental Forest east of Missoula and learn about Montana’s natural resources, wildlife, forestry, water, soils, geology, range management, multiple land use and spend a half-day rafting the Alberton Gorge. GUTS! (Girls Using Their Strengths!), a girls outdoor leadership program sponsored by YWCA Missoula, for ages 10-18. The Youth Kayak Club offers an opportunity to kayak safely through a fun and supportive club atmosphere. Learn fundamental concepts of whitewater kayaking, river awareness and technique and river safety. Zoo Town Surfers takes students to the river every week. Missoula Outdoor Learning Adventures 11th annual Outdoor Adventure Summer Camp 2010, June 7-Aug. 27. MOLA is dedicated to active outdoor learning adventures each and every day. Every week kids can expect to hike, bike, raft, canoe, climb, swim, explore and camp. They can also expect to learn outdoor skills, leadership, self-confidence, teamwork and appreciation for nature. Open to youth of all ages, from elementary school through middle school and high school. Campers are separated by age into three different groups. Groups usually include girls and boys in roughly equal numbers. Minimum age is 7 years by end of summer, but exceptions can be made, especially in the case of siblings, cousins, etc. For kids who are 15 years old by end of summer and have completed their freshman year of high school, there are opportunities for Leaders-In-Training placements. Sessions are one week in length, and destinations change each week. Camp runs 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday, with a campout on Thursday nights.
